Control when messages leave the Exchange server

There may be times when you want your Exchange 2000 server to send particular messages to recipients at different times of the day. This can be especially useful when dealing with messages that contain large file attachments. You can accomplish this by installing an SMTP connector (which Microsoft's Knowledge Base article 265293 discusses in detail) and configuring the connector to defer delivery of certain messages. In this tip I will discuss the steps needed to configure the SMTP connector.

Once you get the SMTP connector set up and running you will then need to configure the connector to defer delivery of e-mail messages. The following steps show how this is done:

  1. go to Connectors.
  2. Right-click on the SMTP connector you created earlier then select Properties.
  3. Click the Delivery Options tab. Here you can specify if all messages should be sent through the connector at the specified connection time or you can adjust the connection time using the drop down list provided.
  4. If you want to set separate delivery options for standard and large messages you can check the box next to "Use Different Delivery Times For Oversize Messages." Once this is done type the minimum size of messages you want to designate as oversized.
  5. In the Connection Time drop down menu you can set the delivery times for the large messages.
  6. Click OK.

Now you have control over when messages should leave the Exchange server.
