One of the minor, but often annoying, problems that plagues Microsoft Outlook and Exchange Server users in multilingual environments is the way Outlook folders (Inbox, Outbox, Notes, Junk Mail, etc.) are named.

When a mailbox is created on Exchange Server, the folder names on that mailbox object aren't set until a client connects to it for the first time. The folders are then assigned permanent names based on the language resources in the client.

For instance, if you have an English-language edition of Microsoft Outlook, and then switch to a Spanish-language version, the folders would still retain their English names.

Up until recently, there wasn't an easy way to get around this problem -- short of deleting and recreating a person's mailbox, which is never convenient. However, Rolf Masuch has written a convenient set of tools that lets you "re-stamp" the mailbox folder names in a different language.

The "Language Stamper" tool, as Rolf calls it, comes in three versions:

  • Language Stamper Admin works on the server side and can be used to rename one or more mailboxes with new language labels. The program includes pre-built labels for English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Russian, but a user can always provide his own custom folder names as well.
  • Language Stamper Client, as the name implies, runs on the client side and can be used to rename a single mailbox that the user logs into with his own credentials.
  • More Microsoft Outlook and Exchange Server tools:

    The Microsoft Outlook Toolbox

Microsoft Outlook and Exchange administration tools

Free Microsoft Exchange and Windows IT downloads

  • The command-line Language Stamper works the same as the client, but from the command line, so it can be scripted or used in a batch file. This version has the same language resources as Language Stamper Admin, but can also be used to create custom folder names.
