Recently I had an instance where an employee left an organization and the department's manager required access to the former employee's Exchange Server mailbox. With Exchange 2000, if you have a user who needs to open another user's mailbox, you have to assign full access rights to this mailbox for the user who needs access.
Here are the steps I followed to grant a user full access rights to open a mailbox in Exchange 2000:
- Open the "Active Directory Users And Computers" MMC console.
- Click View then select Advanced Features option.
- Go to the exchange user that own the mailbox you want to open and on the user properties window select Exchange advanced tab.
- Select Mailbox Rights.
- Click Add then select the user that you want to give full access to this mailbox. The user that you added will now appear in the Name box.
- Select allow (located in the permissions list).
- Click OK.
This Microsoft article covers additional methods for accessing all mailboxes: How to get service account access to all mailboxes in Exchange 2000.
