There are situations when the Systems administrator will be away from office and may need to administer the Exchange 5.5 server remotely. The Exchange server -- one of the mission critical servers in an organization -- must be constantly monitored to ensure that all is well.
One system administrator that still uses Exchange 5.5 wanted to perform some operations remotely. The following is the procedure I applied:
- I used a workstation with Windows NT 4.0 and service pack 6 installed.
- Using the Exchange 5.5 server installation CD, start the Exchange setup program.
- Select custom install then select the Exchange Administrator option.
- Once completed install Exchange Service Pack 3
- Connect to your network using your Remote Access Connection
- When you start the Administrator program select the server you want to administer.
You may get an error message saying that the Exchange server does not respond to remote administration. Here are some possible explanations for this:
The workstation is not a member of the domain
The Remote Access Service (which the remote workstation is connecting to) must be on the same domain as the Exchange Server, or on a domain trusted by the Exchange server's domain.
Permissions Problem
You must be logged on as a user with administrative rights on the same domain as the Exchange server.
