With Exchange 5.5 an error 1276 (displayed as Event ID 1005 in the application log) would normally occur when the information store fails to start. There are several reasons why this error might appear.
You are restoring an Exchange database to a new Exchange installation and you did not enter the organization name or site name correctly; that is, at the point where you are prompted to enter the organization and site names you may have made a typographical error.
The display name was used on the recovery server for the restored objects instead of the directory name. In some cases the display name may be different than the directory name causing the administrator to think that both names are the same.
Once this error shows up the only option you may have is to uninstall Exchange and then reinstall. In order to prevent this hassle it may be wise to double-check the proper naming conventions for the organization and site names on the current Exchange server. This can be done through exchange administrator and viewing the properties of the site and organization on the current Exchange server.
