Preserving mail during a mailbox move

When a mailbox is being moved (to another server, for instance), mail that is being delivered at that time may bounce back to the sender. The best way to keep this from happening is to create an alternate recipient mailbox. This mailbox can be used to store incoming messages while the other mailbox is being moved. Here are the steps you can take to redirect mail to an alternate mailbox:

  1. In Exchange 5.5 Administrator, create a mailbox.

  2. Highlight the mailbox that is to be moved, then click on File and select properties. This will open the mailbox.

  3. Click on the Delivery Options tab.

  4. Select Modify in the Alternate Recipient area. The Global Address List will appear.

  5. Browse through the list for the mailbox that was created. Double-click on the mailbox, then click on the OK button. This will be used as the alternate recipient.

After the mailbox move is completed, you can hide the mailbox that was used as the alternate recipient from the Global Address List for future use.

Note: Most firewall applications can also be set up to store mail while moving mailboxes or performing offline maintenance on the Exchange Server.
