Having to recreate Microsoft Outlook settings because of a crash or move to a new computer can be a big headache.

Copying the .PST file is a fairly trivial operation, but reconfiguring all the same email account settings and preferences is just plain tedious and time-consuming.

I recently came across a program designed specifically to back up and restore Microsoft Outlook settings. It can also save and restore the Windows Address Book, Internet Explorer settings, custom forms and mail data. Backups can be written to a self-extracting .exe file, so the tool itself isn't needed to restore the data on a target computer.

The utility is called Genie Outlook Backup 6, and it works with Outlook 2000 , Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2003. Like many full-fledged backup tools, you can either back up everything or only what's changed (as a time- and space-saving measure).

The restore image can also be written out to removable media (CD/DVD), echoed to a network location or an FTP site, span multiple discs if needed, and optionally compressed and protected with 128-bit encryption.

Aside from working as an on-demand backup system for Microsoft Outlook, it can be automated too. Additionally, backups can be scheduled ahead of time. The program also supports command-line options so it can be integrated into a script. Finally, the results of any backup job can be emailed as a log.

One major omission right now is the lack of support for Outlook 2007.

Genie Outlook Backup 6 costs U.S. $29.95 for a single-user installation.

MEMBER FEEDBACK TO THIS MICROSOFT OUTLOOK TIP

I use a program from Totalidea Software called OutSource-XP. I have not had the opportunity to restore a backup yet, but this application will seemingly restore all Outlook settings as well as Outlook databases.

Doesn't the Microsoft User State Migration Tool do this for free? With support for Office 2007…
