Microsoft Device Emulator (1.0) is a tool that makes it easier to test the behavior of mobile devices that use Exchange ActiveSync.

The program usually ships as a part of Visual Studio, but it can be downloaded as a separate item and run on its own without Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) approval. It runs code specifically compiled for ARM processors, which is the CPU type used in the majority of mobile devices.

Microsoft Device Emulator comes with two Windows Mobile OS images -- Windows Mobile 5.0 with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) (used for direct-push mobile email deployment), and Windows Mobile 2003 SE. So it covers the majority of Windows Mobile devices used right now.

Some additional tools are also available for use with the emulator, such as the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition device images, and a set of localized Windows Mobile 5.0 emulator images which reflect the behaviors of mobile devices in other locales and languages.

Note that the Windows Mobile 5.0 device image requires the presence of the Virtual Machine Network Driver for the Microsoft Device Emulator. This allows the device to make use of the host computer's network stack. It's a small component (only about 300K), so it isn't terribly intrusive.
