Microsoft has made available a release candidate of Exchange Server 2010. This version of the messaging platform will become generally available later this year.

Exchange Server 2010 supports both the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, which is due out in October. Windows Server 2008 R2 will not support Exchange Server 2007, so IT shops upgrading their OS will also need to upgrade to Exchange 2010.

Email-archiving capabilities will be prominent in Exchange Server 2010. The next-generation messaging platform also adds rights-protected email functionality with Active Directory RMS, new transport and routing functions, permissions, high availability and other management features and capabilities.

IT shops can perform an in-place upgrade from Exchange Server 2010 RC to the final version when it becomes available. There is no need to reinstall servers or reconfigure Exchange settings, the Microsoft Exchange Server Team reported.

Customers can now download the Exchange 2010 RC from Microsoft's Website.

Microsoft also plans to release a second service pack for Exchange Server 2007 shortly. Exchange Server 2007 SP2 will offer improved auditing and backup features.
