Indexing makes hunting for information in the public folder store a lot easier.
Compare a normal public folder search to reading page by page through an entire book looking for a single word. Once indexing has been implemented, the search is like looking for a word in a book's index and then going straight to the correct page.
Not only does indexing speed the search process up, but attachments can be indexed. By default, Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) are indexed; so are HTML, text, and embedded MIME message files.
