After you create the Exchange public folder index, you have to populate it. Index population can take a long time, because the entire public folder store must be read first.

Before you begin populating the index, configure Exchange Server so that nobody can search the index until you're done. If somebody searches the public folder index while you're populating, they could receive incomplete search results. More importantly, though, their searches would slow down the indexing process.

To disable Exchange public folder index searches:

  1. Right click on the public folder store and select Properties.

  2. Select the Full Text Indexing tab, and deselect the This Index is Currently Available for Searching by Clients checkbox.

  3. Click OK and you are ready to populate the index.

  4. Right click on the public folder store and select Start Full Population.
