Hardware planning for Exchange almost always focuses on the system's CPU, memory and hard disk. There are a lot of articles on the Web that contain formulas you can use to figure out how much disk space or how much memory your server is going to need.

Rather than repeat the information that is contained in those articles and bore you with a bunch of formulas, I want to use this guide to instead talk about what hardware a server will really need based on its role.

Understanding a server's role is crucial to determining what hardware configuration would be most beneficial. Some of the many roles that Exchange Server can take on are mailbox server, public folder server, bridgehead server, gateway server, or front-end server.
