Exchange Server 2007 SP3 Rollup 5 fixes 13 issues

Microsoft’s Exchange team released Update Rollup 5 for Exchange
Server 2007 SP3 late this week with 13 fixes to issues found since the release
of Rollup Update 4 in July.
Three of the 13 fixes relate to crashes that may occur in the Edge Transport service, so
customers having trouble with that service will find help in this rollup.
Since there are no security or data loss fixes in Rollup 5, it probably won’t be a high priority
for immediate deployment, said Rob Sanfilippo, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, an independent analyst

That is especially true for customers who are cautious about installing rollup updates following
problems
with Microsoft’s updates this year. In March, Microsoft re-released
Exchange Server 2007 SP3 Update Rollup 3 to correct an issue that could have led to database
corruption.
But, it is likely that Microsoft uses additional scrutiny on its rollup releases after multiple
problems. “The probability that RU5 is stable may be higher than with previous rollups,” Sanfilippo
said.
Update Rollup 5 fixes annoyances such as the “some items cannot be deleted" error messages users
get when trying to delete or modify an email message in an Exchange Server 2007 public folder.
It also fixes problems where incorrect sent times show up in the email message body when
replying or forwarding messages using the Exchange Web Services (EWS) application. Other issues
resolved with Rollup Update 5 can be found on Microsoft’s support
website.
Update Rollup 6 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 3 is currently scheduled to release in
April 2012 -- the same month that Microsoft ends mainstream
support for Exchange 2007. Extended support ends in April of 2017.
During the Extended Support phase of the product, Microsoft provides free security updates to
all customers and non-security updates to customers with paid service contracts.
“Exchange 2007 has been stabilized after three service packs (and possibly an upcoming fourth),”
Sanfilippo said. “So, Exchange 2007 customers may not feel an urgency to upgrade before considering
the next major release of Exchange -- which has not been announced, but will probably come in
2013.”
Exchange 2010 hit maturity with Service
Pack 1 more than a year ago and Exchange
2010 SP1 Rollup 5 was released in August.
