For many years, Microsoft has allowed mobile devices to receive messages from an Exchange Server using SMS based synchronization. Although SMS based synchronizations work relatively well, using it can place an excessive drain on a device's battery. Furthermore, this type of synchronization can be expensive if your company's wireless plan doesn't include unlimited SMS messaging.

Fortunately, Microsoft offers an alternative to legacy SMS synchronization, called Always-Up-To-Date. Always-Up-To-Date (AUTD) augments SMS synchronizations to make them more efficient, less costly, and best of all, easier to configure.

In this guide, Exchange MVP Brien Posey provides step-by-step instructions on how to configure AUTD synchronizations for Exchange Server mobile devices.
