The Exchange Server 2007 journaling agent is the component that processes journaling rules you create. It is the key to successfully implementing Exchange 2007 journaling rules. If you set up journaling rules, but the journaling agent has not been activated, Exchange Server will simply ignore the rules.

The journaling agent runs on the Exchange Server hosting the Hub Transport server role. To determine whether or not the journaling agent is running:

  1. Go to the Hub Transport server, open the Exchange Management Shell, and execute the following command:

    Get-TransportAgent

The Get-TransportAgent command will return a status of either True or False, indicating whether or not the journaling agent is enabled.

Figure 1: Verify that the journaling agent is enabled.
    Figure 1

  2. If the journaling agent's enabled status is False, then you will have to enable the journaling agent before continuing. To do so, enter the following command:

    Enable-transportagent

The command returns a rather cryptic message that prompts you to enter additional information. Although it doesn't come right out and say it, what it is prompting you for is the name of the agent that you want to enable.

Figure 2: The Enable-TransportAgent command prompts for more information.

  3. To enable the journaling agent, enter the words "Journaling Agent."

Figure 3: Enter the words "Journaling Agent" in response to the prompt.

  4. The Exchange Management Shell doesn't provide you with any confirmation that the journaling agent has been enabled. For that matter, the command doesn't even acknowledge that it has done anything at all. So enter the Get-TransportAgent command once again to confirm that the journaling agent has been activated.
