- Back Orifice is a rootkit program designed for the purpose of exposing the security deficiencies of Microsoft's Windows operating systems. The program's name is inspired by the name of Microsoft's BackOffice product. Created by a group of hackers called the Cult of the Dead Cow, Back Orifice allows someone at one computer to control everything on another, remote computer running Windows 95 or later. Back Orifice can sniff passwords, record keystrokes, access a desktop's file system and more, while remaining undetected.
Back Orifice is provided free as an open source program. It can then be delivered to unsuspecting users as a Trojan horse for hacking purposes, or used as a networked remote administration tool.
Back Orifice 2000 (BO2K) allows access to Windows NT and 2000, in addition to 95 and 98. BO2K has the same capabilities as Back Orifice, plus it uses cryptography for secure network administration and features extended plugin architecture for flexibility.
