If your organization uses Exchange 2013 for email, plenty of features ease server management and administration tasks. Some of these tools are improvements upon earlier versions of Exchange, and others are new to Exchange 2013.
This glossary provides the most useful Exchange 2013 management tools for email and mailboxes, as well as features for collaborating with colleagues and monitoring system health.

Exchange 2013 Administration Center (EAC): The EAC is a Web-based management console that helps admins maintain and migrate mailboxes, monitor processes and apply Outlook Web Access policies. EAC replaces the Exchange Management Console and the Exchange Control Panel from earlier versions of the platform. It is optimized for on-premises, online and hybrid deployments.
Exchange 2013 data loss prevention (DLP): The DLP tool allows admins to manually enforce message content rules. Message templates block or filter sensitive data, controlling the flow of information to and from an Exchange 2013 environment. Admins can use existing message policy templates, build on top of existing templates or create them from scratch in the EAC.
Exchange 2013 In-Place Hold: The Exchange 2013 In-Place Hold is an e-discovery feature that helps admins determine what items to hold and for how long. Admins can preserve items for an indefinite amount of time or restore mailbox items that were previously deleted, as well as place users and user mailboxes on hold. Mail preservation is important if the company becomes involved in litigation and needs to use the data as evidence for civil or criminal legal proceedings.
Exchange 2013 Managed Availability: Managed Availability, also known as Active Monitoring or Local Active Monitoring, is a built-in monitoring and recovery platform for Exchange that detects and recovers from problems. The management tool polls and analyzes hundreds of health metrics every second, and typically fixes an error automatically upon detection. Instead of trying to identify or communicate the root cause of a problem, Managed Availability focuses on availability, latency and errors. It has two forms of service: the parent process -- Health Manager Service -- which manages a host of worker processes, and the child process -- Health Manager Worker -- which is a worker process that performs runtime tasks.
Exchange 2013 Managed Store: This Exchange 2013 feature isolates failures at the database level. If a single database process encounters an error, only that database is affected. Managed Store, formerly known as the Exchange Information Store in earlier versions of Exchange, improves integration with the Exchange Replication service.
Exchange 2013 Poison Message Queue: This management tool provides quarantine by isolating messages that have been deemed detrimental to the Exchange 2013 environment after a transport server or service failure. The messages may be harmful or the result of a poorly written agent that caused server failure when Exchange tried to process the message. Items in the queue do not resume or expire unless the admin moves them manually.
Exchange 2013 Safety Net: The Exchange 2013 Safety Net reduces data loss by maintaining a queue of successfully delivered messages. A copy of the delivered message stays within the Safety Net until an admin-established expiration date. The default period for automatically deleted messages is two days, unless otherwise specified. The Safety Net improves upon Exchange 2007 and 2010's Transport Dumpster, and does not require database availability groups.
Exchange 2013 site mailbox: A site mailbox is an Exchange 2013 feature that simplifies collaboration among SharePoint 2013 users by acting as a central repository for files, documents and email messages. Exchange 2013 site mailboxes are linked to a corresponding SharePoint site and allow members to drag and drop email messages and documents into the mailbox's Documents folder, which is located within the Outlook client.
Microsoft Hybrid Configuration Wizard: The Microsoft Hybrid Configuration Wizard provides admins with a method to create and configure hybrid Exchange deployments. The wizard verifies that the on-premises and Exchange Online setups are able to support the deployment, then tests the credentials of both accounts and makes any necessary configuration changes. The Hybrid Configuration wizard consolidates the two hybrid deployment wizards from Exchange 2010 SP2 into one tool.
