QUESTION POSED ON: 22 June 2004
I would like to upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 or 2003. Which would you recommend, Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003?

Also, we have three sites running Exchange 5.5. I am responsible for only one of them, and our server receives messages from our main site (not mine). Can Exchange 2000 and/or 2003 work with Exchange 5.5 in a distributed e-mail server environment? If I upgraded my Exchange server to 2000/2003 will I have problems replicating Exchange accounts to the main site?

EXPERT RESPONSE
Migrating to Exchange 2003 from Exchange 5.5 is easier than migrating to Exchange 2000 because of the new tools that are available to help administrators migrate. Also, Exchange 2003 has been around for 12 months now and Service Pack 1 has just been released. A mixed 2003/5.5 environment will work just fine. You will, however, have to implement Active Directory with a mind to expanding it later to encompass the other locations. Your site will run the Active Directory Connector and install the First Exchange 2003 Server into the Existing Exchange 5.5 Organization. I encourage you to visit the Exchange Technical Library at the url below, specifically the Exchange Server 2003 Deployment Guide.
