QUESTION POSED ON: 08 March 2004
I have an Exchange server running Windows Server 2000 and Exchange Server 2000. Whenever I create a new user and mailbox at the same time, the folder that it creates on the M: drive where e-mails are stored does not have administrator privileges. I need to have administrator privileges in order to backup the folders on a storage server. Do you know how to fix this?

There are really two separate issues that need to be addressed here:

1. First, it sounds like you mean that the folder and its contents are not accessible by administrators. By design, administrators are denied access to user mailboxes in Exchange 2000 and later. So what you are experiencing is normal, expected behavior.

2. Second, you should not under any circumstances use file system-based backup software to backup the contents of the M: drive (or whatever drive letter is represented by the kernel-level file system mapping provided by the Exchange Installable File System). Not only are such actions unsupported, they are also known to cause damage to the information store databases. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298924 for details on this issue. And for details on how to properly backup an Exchange 2000 computer running on Windows 2000, see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;258243.
