My NT server running Exchange 5.5 (or earlier, not really sure) just crashed. I have a copy of the Exchange databases (offline backup). Can I install Exchange 2000 on my Win2000 server and then read/import the old databases? Of particular interest are calendar, mail, contacts and notes (or is that all?) If so, can you point me in the right direction? I've been doing some research and found all kinds of upgrade articles but they all assume the old 5.5 exchange is still up and running. Unfortunately, mine is not and we'd prefer not to revive it unless we have no other choice.

If you rebuild an exact replica of that server (e.g., same name, same disk partitions, same software, etc.) you should be able to put the databases back in their original locations and use them. I recommend copying the files instead of moving them. That way, if something does go wrong in the restoration process you still have your original offline backup copy.
