QUESTION POSED ON: 20 October 2008
When we send email to a particular Exchange Server distribution group, we sporadically receive the following Exchange Event ID error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeTransport
Event Category: Categorizer
Event ID: 6009
Date: 10/12/2008
Time: 4:04:15 PM
User: N/A
Computer: VAMAIL1
Description: Categorizer encountered a hard error while processing a message. While processing user 'SMTP:research-L@inquent.com', the function 'CCatExpandableRecip::HrExpandAttribute' called 'pIUTF8->BeginUTF8AttributeEnumeration' which returned error code '0xc0040550' (). ( f:tisp2transmtsrcphatqcatsrcccatrecip.cpp@3048 )

How do we troubleshoot this Exchange Server error?

This is a long shot, but are you running Symantec Mail Security? I've seen one other incident in which their heuristic spam engine ran on a machine that had this same Exchange Server Event ID error. Disabling the heuristic spam engine fixed the problem. If this is the case, you should call Symantec to confirm. Outside of this, the only suggestion I have is to call Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS).
