QUESTION POSED ON: 20 October 2008
Lookout for Outlook, a free third-party add-on tool that searches and indexes Microsoft Outlook public folders, doesn't run on Outlook 2007. We're now looking for a free solution for indexing and searching our Microsoft Outlook 2007 public folders. The Advanced search feature native to Outlook 2007 is not very helpful.

Is there a way to access Outlook public folders via a share and browse through subfolders with Windows Explorer? In Exchange 2000, I recall that public folders could be accessed from the M: drive. Is this still possible? Or could we index a file share with a desktop search program?

I recommend you look at Windows Desktop Search or, alternatively, something like Google Desktop.

MEMBER FEEDBACK TO THIS ASK THE EXPERT Q&A:

Lookout for Outlook can work on Microsoft Outlook 2007, with a few modifications. I believe it remains the best solution; several people in our office refused to upgrade to Outlook 2007 until we could insure them Lookout, as well. In my opinion, there is no better, more focused, easier to use indexer than Lookout. If you're willing to attempt these modifications, this link will help you install Lookout on Outlook 2007.
