I have a client that purchased Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 and set up an Exchange server in the process. The local users have grown fond of the "public folders" section, and have populated it with several hundred folders, documents and email. That's as far as their Exchange needs go. They get all their email through a local POP3 provider.

I don't really want to continue managing an Exchange server and would like to migrate all their public folder content to local sharing on the server. So far, I haven't found a tool that can do this. To do it manually seems to be quite cumbersome. Do you have any suggestions?

Windows SBS 2003 includes an intranet called CompanyWeb, which is based on Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) and can typically be accessed from your local area network (LAN) at http://CompanyWeb. This solution will be a good starting point for users to access the public data rather than from the Exchange public folders. If you want a more full-featured solution, then you should consider Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 running on separate server hardware.

In either case, you can use a utility such as AvePoint's DocAve 4.5 Public Folder Migrator for SharePoint to do this. Download the trial version and see if it meets your needs.
