QUESTION POSED ON: 06 August 2008
I am trying to migrate from a Windows NT4 domain with Exchange Server 5.5 to Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 and Exchange 2003. I have found all of the required steps for doing this, but I just realized that the old Exchange 5.5 organization unit (OU) is different than the domain name of the Windows SBS 2003 OU. This breaks my ability to use the Active Directory Connector (ADC) tool to import users and mailboxes.

Is there another way to import the Exchange message store cleanly and easily? It's a small enough enterprise that I can rebuild the user accounts fairly painlessly. Also, is there any way, short of reinstalling the Windows SBS 2003 server, to change its OU for Exchange?

If you have a small organization and you don't want to deal with connectors or rebuilding the Windows SBS server, consider using the ExMerge utility to export all mailboxes from the Exchange 5.5 server into .PST files. Then use the ExMerge utility to import the .PST files into Exchange 2003. Note that you must use the version of ExMerge that is specific to the version of Exchange Server that you're using. Details on how to use the ExMerge utility can be found on Microsoft's website.
