QUESTION POSED ON: 19 October 2006
We are using Exchange 5.5 on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server. Outlook Web Access (OWA) is installed on Windows 2000 Server and Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0.

Outlook Web Access works fine for the domain where the Exchange Server service is located -- let's say Domain A. However, Domain B users are unable to access their mailboxes through Outlook Web Access. Administrators of Domain B can access Outlook Web Access on Domain A just fine.

Users of Domain B can access Exchange Server mail through Microsoft Outlook, but not Outlook Web Access. They get the error message: "Page can not be displayed. Internal server error." What can we do for our Domain B users?

Try these troubleshooting tips to resolve the problem:

  • Ping the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for the server. Do you get a reply?
  • Tracert the FQDN or IP address for the server. Is it able to find it?
  • On the IIS server, check if users on Domain B have permission to access OWA.
  • Check the DNS records for the Exchange server on Domain B.

MEMBER FEEDBACK TO THIS ASK THE EXPERT Q&A:

The question states that administrators in Domain B can use Outlook Web Access (OWA) just fine, but regular users on that same domain receive error messages. This means the problem is one of user rights (permissions), yet Patricia's response suggests that the problem is one of basic network connectivity.

If it were network connectivity, then even the administrators wouldn't be able to connect.
