I would recommend doing this in the following steps:
- Stop Exchange
- Backup the database
- Replace physical disk with larger capacity (ensure path is the same)
- Restore database
- Mount Exchange database
Backup and restore are generic terms. You could just file-copy to another drive if you would prefer. I believe this should work, but testing and documenting this process in the lab will make you feel better about the entire process.
