QUESTION POSED ON: 28 March 2006
I am running Exchange 5.5 on a Windows 2000 server. Intermittently, Outlook users are denied access to their mailboxes (i.e., problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server), or kicked out of the Exchange server while working. Any idea why this is happening?

EXPERT RESPONSE
It sounds to me like you're either experiencing network congestion or latency or name resolution issues. You need to spend some time trying to isolate this issue. Questions to ask include:
  • Is this limited to a subset of my network or are users getting this consistently across the network?

  • Is this limited to a specific time of day (i.e., mornings when lots of users are logging in)?

  • Check name resolution using RPCPing (on Exchange Server CD) and confirm name resolution is working.

Once you've done all these things, feel free to write back in if you have further questions or have more details and haven't managed to narrow down the root cause.
