QUESTION POSED ON: 21 October 2004
I am trying to restore an Exchange 2000 database to another server in our network for backup purposes. The server has a different host name as our production Exchange server, and it is on a different subnet. Otherwise, the Organization, Admin Group, Storage group and database names are all the same. The Windows 2000 server and service packs are the same on both servers. From the restore procedures using NT Backup, I cannot get past entering a location for the Temporary Log and Patch Files. I keep getting the error "Unable to create log path. Check to make sure that it is a valid path." I am not using the original location; I've created a new folder on the C: drive and I'm trying to use that.

You should check the following:

1. Do you have full permissions to the folder you're trying to write to on the C drive?

2. Have you made sure that the LegacyExchangeDN attribute on the recovery server matches that of the server you're recovering? For information on how to change the LegacyExchangeDN attribute see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 273863 "How to Change the LegacyExchangeDN Attribute in Native Mode with ADSI Edit".

I hope that one of these two suggestions will enable you to recover your server. I suspect the latter of the two describes the issue you are seeing.
