Dan has often been called upon by clients to help analyze business problems and formulate solutions where the scope of the problem is unclear, the best approach is not obvious, and new technologies may be required. He has practical experience in multiple generations of IT technologies, including mainframes, client server systems, service oriented architectures and cloud computing. Dan holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science and has done additional graduate work in statistics and advanced data analysis. He is constantly working on projects which push the boundaries of established practices and require new algorithms, data management techniques, and methodologies. In his current engagement, Dan is working on "big data" problems found in life sciences research and has worked on similar types of problems in other domains, such as financial services. His pragmatic approach is reflected in his books and articles where he often frames technology discussions around business drivers and operational issues. In addition to his design work, Dan has had operational responsibilities and understands what is needed to keep systems functioning while meeting business requirements ranging from constrained budgets to compliance issues.
