Q

Upgrade from Exchange 2000 to 2003 in one or two steps?

Can you upgrade from Exchange 2000 Standard Edition to Exchange 2003 in one step, or should you do it in two steps?
You should have no issue in performing an in-place upgrade of Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003, as long as you have removed unsupported modules prior to the upgrade task. Items like the ccMail and MS Mail connector, KMS, conference server, MIS, chat and instant messaging shouldn't be installed on the server destined for upgrade.

Microsoft publishes a good article on this process: Considerations when you upgrade to Exchange Server 2003.

If the question is more a result of process on standard and enterprise, I believe you will need to follow this path: Exchange 2000 Standard Edition to Exchange 2000 Enterprise Edition to Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition ~or~ Exchange 2000 Standard Edition to Exchange 2003 Standard Edition to Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition.
