Does Exchange Information Store affect versions 5.5 or 2000?

According to Microsoft, the MS Exchange IS (information store) can only go up to 16GB. Thereafter, Exchange server comes to a halt. Does this apply to Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000? And, if so, how can I get around this problem?

This limit is found in the Standard Edition of Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000 and Exchange Server 2003. The Enterprise Edition of Exchange (all versions) does not have this limit.
