Can OWA 5.5 users access email from Exchange Server 2003?

I read your response to Migrating OWA users from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003. You recommend deploying an Outlook Web Access (OWA) 2003 front-end server with an Exchange Server 2003 back-end server, while gradually mirgrating users' mailboxes from Exchange Server 5.5.

Are you saying that OWA 5.5 users can only retrieve email from an Exchange 5.5 mailbox server and OWA 2003 users can only retrieve email from an Exchange 2003 server? What problems would occur if we use OWA 5.5 to access an Exchange 2003 mailbox server? Will this scenario work? If so, can we run both OWA 5.5 and OWA 2003?
