/3GB switches and virtual memory fragmentation

Exchange 2000 server gets event id 9582 hourly; I don't have the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file. Will this help alleviate virtual memory fragmentation?

The /3GB switch is required on servers with more than 1GB of RAM running on Advanced/Enterprise or DataCenter editions of Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. If you haven't applied it yet, I would recommend doing so. You will need to reboot your server after you insert this switch in your boot.ini file. If you will be using Notepad to edit the boot.ini file, make sure you don't save it as a txt file (it will be saved as boot.ini.txt if you do).

There are other memory management tweaks as well -- if you run ExBPA it will point out issues such as the HeapDeCommitFreeBlockThreshhold registry value.

These details, and more info on troubleshooting virtual memory fragmentation issues are documented in KBA 325044.
